What Does a Typical Telemedicine Hormone Therapy Appointment Look Like?

Back to All Defy Medical Health Articles & Resources

If you’ve looked into Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) recently, you’ve probably noticed that it’s offered via telemedicine.

That means no waiting rooms, no referrals, and no driving across town to see a specialist.

But what does a telemedicine hormone therapy appointment actually look like?

For many people, it’s their first experience with this kind of virtual care. Knowing what to expect can make the process less intimidating.

Here’s a walkthrough of how a telemedicine hormone therapy consultation works at Defy Medical.

Before Your Appointment: Lab Work Comes First

Unlike other online telemedicine clinics, Defy Medical doesn’t treat hormone therapy as a one-size-fits-all plan. We’ve been offering this kind of care for over 15 years, and we’ve created a process that lets us customize and respond to patient needs.

Before one of our providers can recommend your tailored treatment, they need a clear picture of what’s actually happening in your body. To capture that, Defy Medical requires comprehensive lab work.

Labs can be ordered via our Patient Portal and drawn at a nearby LabCorp or Quest location. We also offer access to mobile phlebotomy, where a phlebotomist comes to the location of your choice.

To begin your care, we require a recently completed Physical Exam (PE), as well.

What’s Included in Defy Medical’s Testing

Our comprehensive panels are designed to capture a full hormonal baseline.

For men, this includes total and free Testosterone, luteinizing hormone (LH), Estradiol sensitive, sex hormone binding globulin (SHGB) and more.

For women, the panel includes total and free Testosterone, Estradiol, Progesterone, DHEA-S, and other levels relevant to where you are in your hormonal journey.

In addition, our comprehensive wellness panel screens for thyroid disease, organ function, cardiovascular health, and more. This helps us pinpoint the exact cause of your symptoms.

Your Initial Consultation

Once your lab results finalize, you’ll schedule your initial telemedicine consultation with a Defy Medical provider.

Our in-house care team includes physicians, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners who specialize in hormone optimization and have spent years focused specifically in this space. See our care team.

The initial consultation is conducted via secure video conferencing.

You’ll receive a link to your email ahead of time and can join from your phone, tablet, or computer — wherever you’re most comfortable. We recommend taking the video call at home in a private space.

Initial consultations last up to one hour to give you time with your provider. We encourage you to prepare questions and discussion points beforehand so your provider can tailor your consultation to you.

Defy Medical Initial Consultation: What We Cover

Reviewing Your Symptoms and Health History

Your provider will want to understand what brought you to Defy Medical — what you’re experiencing, how long it’s been going on, and how it’s affecting your daily life.

This isn’t a rushed, checkbox-style intake. Providers at Defy Medical take a symptoms-first approach, meaning your lived experience is treated as clinically meaningful data, not just background information.

Exploring Your Lab Results

You’ll review the results of your lab panel with your Defy Medical provider. This conversation will dive into your overall hormone balance, as well as any potential issues that could be impacting your health.

For example, our thyroid screening often identifies previously undiagnosed thyroid conditions that impact quality of life.

Our providers also take symptoms into account when discussing your lab results. Rather than simply comparing your numbers to a reference range, your provider will interpret your labs within the context of how you feel.

Going Over Your Goals for Treatment

Whether you’re looking to restore energy and libido, manage menopause or low T symptoms, preserve muscle mass, improve body composition, or simply feel like yourself again, your goals shape the direction of your protocol.

You’ll be able to tell your provider what you’d like to accomplish with your care.

Discussing Your Treatment Options

Your provider will walk through your personalized treatment options. This includes a discussion on which medications and delivery systems are available (injections, creams, pellets, capsules, etc.).

You’ll be able to choose your delivery system (as appropriate) based on your goals and lifestyle factors—like whether you’re comfortable with self-administered injections.

Defy Medical offers more than 600 therapeutic options for patients, which means we can create a care plan just for you.

Answering Your Questions

This is your time! Defy Medical providers welcome questions from patients.

If you’re uncertain about a medication, a side effect, or what to expect in the first few months, we encourage you to ask your provider.

What Happens After Your Appointment

After your appointment, you’ll receive a summary of your consultation, which you can view in the My Treatment Notes section of the Patient Portal.

Our patient support staff will put together a cart in your Portal account based on your provider’s care plan. This will include any prescribed medications, supplies, and recommended supplemental therapies.

Once you place this order, your prescriptions are sent to one of our Pharmacy Partners who produce and ship your medications directly to your home.

You’ll receive detailed instructions on how to take your medications, and you can contact our Patient Support team if you have any questions.

Follow-Up Appointments

Hormone therapy isn’t a set-it-and-forget-it treatment. Your body responds and adapts over time, and your protocol should, too.

At Defy Medical, your first follow-up appointment and follow-up lab panel take place three months after your initial consultation. This allows your provider to work closely with you at the beginning of your protocol to monitor your response and make any necessary adjustments.

After that, follow-up consultations and lab work continue every six months.

These appointments are shorter than your initial consultation — up to 30 minutes — and are focused on reviewing your progress, addressing any concerns, and making changes if needed to optimize your results.

Common reasons a protocol might be adjusted include:

  • Symptom changes (positive or negative)
  • How your levels look in your follow-up panels
  • Lifestyle shifts like significant weight loss or changes in activity level
  • How your goals evolve over time

If something comes up between scheduled appointments (a question about a side effect, a concern about how you’re feeling, etc.) you can reach out to our Patient Support team without having to wait until your next visit.

Why Telemedicine Care Works for Hormone Therapy

Defy Medical’s telemedicine care is well-suited to hormone therapy for a few reasons.

First, most of the clinically meaningful information comes from your labs and your symptoms — neither of which requires you to be physically present with a provider.

Second, hormone therapy is ongoing care, meaning the convenience of virtual appointments makes it far more likely that patients will stay consistent with their follow-ups and monitoring. And follow-through ultimately leads to better outcomes and improved lives.
