What causes hair loss?
The most common cause of hair loss in men and women is androgenic alopecia.
This is an inherited sensitivity to DHT (dihydrotestosterone) that causes hair follicles to shrink, leading to thinner hair and bald patches. It’s sometimes called male- and female-pattern baldness.
Other causes of hair loss include:
- Lifestyle Factors – Poor diet, chronic stress, illicit drug use, heavy smoking and drinking, and other habits can trigger hair loss and thinning.
- Nutritional Deficiencies – Lack of key nutrients like iron, zinc, Vitamin D, Vitamin A, and Biotin can affect hair health and growth.
- Certain Medications – Medications affecting hormone levels, as well as treatments for high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, and cholesterol, can cause hair loss.
- Medical Conditions – Various health concerns including thyroid disease, anemia, liver disease, and kidney disease can affect hair loss and growth.
