Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Injections for Osteoarthritis & Chronic Tendonitis

Defy Medical patients can now benefit from a treatment using Platelet-Rich Plasma injections. This non-surgical treatment can reduce pain, providing long-term relief from common orthopedic conditions including osteoarthritis and chronic tendonitis. Platelet rich plasma (PRP) is a concentrated blood sample that contains high levels of platelets, a critical component to restore damaged tissues. Platelets contain growth factors and a concentration of stem cells that are responsible for stimulating tissue generation and repair. Growth factors derived from platelets are responsible for soft tissue repair, bone regeneration, development of new blood vessels, and stimulation of the wound specific healing process.

Platelets and accompanying stem cells are responsible for repair, whether in healing an injury or recovering from surgery. PRP Prices

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy
Athletes and active individuals of all ages who endure chronic pain from tendon injuries or osteoarthritis may finally get relief from a safe, non-surgical procedure. It's called Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy, and it utilizes platelets from the athletes' own blood to rebuild a damaged tendon or cartilage. It has been successful in not only relieving the pain, but also in promoting the healing process.

The body’s first response to soft tissue injury is to deliver platelet cells.

  • Packed with growth and healing factors, platelets initiate repair and attract the critical assistance of stem cells
  • PRP’s natural healing process intensifies the body’s efforts by delivering a higher concentration of platelets directly into the area in need
  • To create PRP, a small sample of your blood is drawn (similar to a lab test sample) and placed in a centrifuge that spins the blood at high speeds, separating the platelets from the other components. The process is handled manually by a lab technician, producing higher concentrations of platelets and a much more pure concentration of the beneficial blood components
  • The PRP is then injected into and around the point of injury, jump-starting and significantly strengthening the healing process
  • Because your own blood is used, there is no risk of a transmissible infection and a low risk of allergic reaction

What are Platelets

Platelets and accompanying stem cells are responsible for repair, whether in healing an injury or recovering from surgery. Platelets are found circulating in the blood in relatively small numbers. By concentrating the platelets drawn from your own blood supply, we are able to harness the power of platelets to relieve pain and stop inflammation for orthopedic disorders and injuries.

Platelet rich plasma injections are replacing traditional orthopedic surgery in many instances for conditions ranging from soft tissue injuries (tendonitis, muscle tears, ligamentous injuries) to various joint afflictions, such as a torn meniscus or mild to moderate arthritis of the joint.

PRP can effectively treat the following conditions:

Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis, also known as degenerative arthritis or degenerative joint disease, is a group of mechanical abnormalities involving degradation of joints, including articular cartilage and subchondral bone. Symptoms may include joint pain, tenderness, stiffness, locking, and sometimes an effusion. When bone surfaces become less well protected by cartilage, bone may be exposed and damaged. As a result of decreased movement secondary to pain, regional muscles may atrophy, and ligaments may become more lax. Platelet-Rich Plasma Therapy is done in an exam room and takes less than an hour. The patient's blood is drawn and placed in a centrifuge for 15 minutes to separate out the platelets. The platelet-rich plasma is then injected into the damaged portion of the tendon or cartilage.

Tendonitis

Tendons are the rope-like structures that connect muscle to bone, enabling the bone to move. When a tendon is first injured, it can become inflamed, swollen and painful. This injury is often experienced by athletes in tennis, baseball, football, and any other sport that requires repetitive throwing motions. Athletes who endure chronic pain from tendon injuries can finally get relief from a safe, non-surgical procedure. It's called Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy, and it utilizes platelets from the athletes' own blood to rebuild a damaged tendon. It has been successful in not only relieving the pain, but also in jump starting the healing process.

PRP Therapy Risks

Because PRP effectively induces an inflammatory response, patients will most likely experience some post-procedural pain at the injection site for up to 48 hours. Higher volumes of injected PRP may cause more post-injection pain. Post-procedural pain can typically be managed with ice and over-the-counter pain relievers like acetaminophen (Tylenol®).

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents (NSAIDS) such as aspirin (Bayer®) or ibuprofen (Motrin®, Advil®) should be avoided as they exhibit anti-platelet and anti-coagulant effects, which may diminish the effectiveness of the PRP treatment.

Purpose of Initial Labs

There is no blood test for the diagnosis of osteoarthritis. Blood tests are performed to exclude diseases that can cause secondary osteoarthritis , as well as to exclude other arthritis conditions that can mimic osteoarthritis. Separately, certain hormones can assist with the management of inflammation and pain perception. In addition, sex, growth, and thyroid hormones promote the restoration and strength of bone, muscle, and important supporting structures which may aid in the healing of certain injuries. Lab results will be discussed during the procedure and treatments may be offered if any deficiencies are diagnosed.

How many treatments are necessary?

Some patients with more difficult injuries may require more than one series of injections to achieve a successful outcome. The majority of PRP patients find that within 3 months of their first treatment they can return to most or all of the activities they were doing before the pain started. Each set of treatments is spaced approximately 12-24 weeks apart. There is no limit to the number of treatments you can have. The risks and side effects do not change with the number of injections. We have patients who have reported experiencing significant benefit after a single treatment, while some experienced an increased benefit with 2-3 treatments.

Terumo Harvest Smart Prep System

Terumo Harvest Smart Prep System

Defy Medical uses the Harvest SmartPrep system which is the gold standard in PRP and Stem Cell harvest technology.

With its patented Cell Capture™ Technology, the Harvest SmartPrep® System consistently delivers the optimal cellular composition and concentration of autologous platelet product to optimize conditions for healing & restoration.

  • Recovers the highest percentage of platelets and corresponding growth factors – up to 80% of available platelets
  • Contains increased concentrations of stem cells
  • Reduces the granulocyte levels to deliver a non-inflammatory product
  • Generates the greatest level of reproducibility – only 5% coefficient of variance
  • Only 15 minutes processing time for the highest quality PRP
  • In addition the Harvest system has documented sterility of concentrated platelet product when following the manufacturer’s instructions for use

Harvest PRP delivers a concentration of autologous platelets and growth factors that is roughly 4-6 times greater than that found in whole blood. Unlike other products, it delivers a broad range of growth factors in the proper concentration and ratios to help optimize conditions for healing. Clinical studies have shown that application of PRP can help reduce bleeding, minimize pain, reduce infection rates, and optimize overall healing.

Harvest is a leader in products used to process and concentrate platelets, bone marrow aspirate, and adipose tissue.
