What Are common side effects of GLP-1 medications?

Back to FAQs

Common side effects are typically mild and often improve as your body adjusts to the medication. These include:

  • Nausea, vomiting and diarrhea
  • Abdominal discomfort and a feeling of fullness
  • Constipation
  • Fatigue and tiredness
  • Temporary injection site redness or pain
  • Heartburn (especially for patients with GERD)

To limit these side effects, GLP-1 medication is titrated, or started at a lower dose and gradually increased over time. This helps the body adapt to the medication.

Rare but serious side effects include:

  • Pancreatitis
  • Gallstones
  • Bowel obstruction
  • Kidney issues
  • Worsening diabetes-triggered eye conditions

In your consultation, you’ll be able to discuss potential side effects and review supplemental treatments to help address them. For example, Defy Medical can prescribe Zofran to assist in managing nausea. You may also opt for B-12 injections to help support energy levels as your body adjusts.
